Additional information: Green Chimneys was founded in 1947 by the Ross Family, who purchased a 75 acre farm in the Town of Patterson, Putnam County, NY to house a private school where children could interact with farm animals. In June of 1948 Green Chimneys Farm for Little Folk opened its door with 11 students enrolled in the program. The property has since been expanded to over 160 acres and enrollment in the 2002-2003 school year is nearly 170 students.
The most unique aspect of Green Chimneys' philosophy for treatment of at-risk children is a vast program incorporating animal assisted therapy, animal assisted activities and horticultural therapy. Simply put, we have nearly 350 injured, abused or abandoned farm animals who live at our farm, and the children of Green Chimneys, some with similar backgrounds, are assisted in their own healing by caring for these animals. Likewise, children gain great insight from raising their own organic vegetables and flowers and learning about caring for the Earth.
Green Chimneys sees its mission "to provide innovative and caring services for children, families and animals" and targets its services at restoring and strengthening the emotional health and well-being of children and families and fostering optimal functioning and independence. We strive to develop a harmonious relationship between people, animals, plants, nature and the environment through an array of educational, recreational, vocational and mental health services. We are a voluntary, non-sectarian. multi-service agency.
