The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is a not-for-profit organization providing services to individuals and their families who are affected by alcohol and other drugs. LICADD offers comprehensive education, prevention, assessment, referral and intervention services. Why Does LICADD Exist? LICADD was established in 1956 as the pioneer not-for-profit health agency to combat alcoholism and other drug dependence within Long Island’s communities. It was founded by R. Brinkley Smithers who dedicated his life to helping those affected by chemical dependency. He confronted the common misconception that alcoholism is a moral issue simply requiring will power to overcome. Building upon this philosophy, LICADD recognizes addiction as a treatable disease. The agency is committed to reducing the incidence and prevalence of the disease of chemical dependency and related problems within Long Island’s communities. What Has LICADD Accomplished? Today, almost 50 years since its inception, LICADD has directly assisted more than 76,000 individuals and/or families find effective treatment and recovery programs for alcoholism and other drug problems. Thousands more have been reached by our alcohol/drug education program presentations in schools and to community groups. There is much that remains to be done. Description: The Nassau County Sports Commission is a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization that focuses on health education and community recognition. Community programming includes distribution of educational material on topics such as childhood obesity prevention, positive sportsmanship and the perils of performance enhancing drugs. Throughout the year, the NCSC will also conduct seminars focusing on these hot button issues. Fitness Trail construction in our Nassau County parks and equipment granting are other health related programming made available by the NCSC. The Sports Commission is Nassau County’s leading source of sports recognition highlighted by our annual awards dinner which features the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame and many other awards highlighting our community’s elite athletes of all ages.
